Michael D. Tyne

President and Chairman of Karlsberger

Michael D. Tyne« Contact | Michael D. Tyne, Chairman of Karlsberger, is celebrating his 34th year with the firm. Mike started at Karlsberger in 1977 as the founder of Karlsberger Planning Inc. and grew the practice to a nationally recognized leader in health facilities planning and design. Mike was named president of Karlsberger Companies in 1987. Under his management, the firm evolved into an international leader in pediatric healthcare design and completed notable community hospital projects across the country. In 2004, Karlsberger received the Gold Medal Firm award by the AIA Ohio, one of the highest honors bestowed on an architectural practice.

Mike was elevated to Chairman of the Board in 1995 and has continued to lead the firm to greatness. Recent achievements include the design of the first LEED® Platinum hospital; completion of eight new hospitals as well as over six million square feet of healthcare facilities expansion and renovation; and an ongoing, top 10 ranking in the annual Modern Healthcare magazine’s survey of the best healthcare architectural firms in the U.S.

Mike is a keeper of Louis Karlsberger’s vision to produce great design and to provide exemplary service. Mike is a Fellow of the Health Facilities Institute and a life member of the American Hospital Association. He has lectured and published extensively of behalf of academic and professional organizations throughout North America, Middle East, and Asia.

Sandra Shield Tkacz, AIA, ACHA, NCARB

Chief Executive Officer

Sandra Shield Tkacz« Contact | Sandy has dedicated 16 years of her professional career to healthcare design including programming, master planning, medical planning, and project management. The scope of projects she has worked on range from 10,000 sf medical office buildings and tenant improvements to replacement hospital campuses of several million square feet. Beyond the numerous publications and lectures that Sandy has contributed to, she has a passion for teaching which led her to develop an MBA course and an executive education course- Principles of Design Management, for the University of Richmond, Robins School of Business. In short, she believes that good design is good business and that innovation and design thinking skills are a new core competency for every business leader. Sandy received her Master’s from the Harvard Graduate School of design and her Bachelor’s of Fine Arts from Parsons School of Design.

Robert L. Grundey, AIA

Senior Vice President | Executive Architect

Robert Grundey« Contact | Bob brings over 40 years of professional experience to provide leadership and oversight of project delivery teams. As a project executive, he manages the firm’s resources, including the scheduling and budgeting of manpower as well as providing teams with the expertise required. Bob has managed a wide variety of projects ranging from new, freestanding community hospitals to phased, ongoing expansions and renovations. With Karlsberger since 1983, he has worked on many notable projects including the recently completed Dublin Methodist Hospital for OhioHealth, in Dublin, Ohio, recognized as a Pebble Project by the Center of Healthcare Design; renovations and expansions at Norton Health, Louisville, Kentucky; expansion and renovations at Children’s Hospital Central California, Fresno, California; and the new TriPoint Medical Center for Lake Health in Concord Township, Ohio. Bob is a graduate of Columbus State Community College in Architectural Drafting Technology and is a registered architect.

Jonathan Gyory, AIA, LEED AP

Senior Vice President | Director of Design

Jonathan Gyory« Contact | Jonathan is a senior healthcare architect with 28 years of professional experience, providing leadership and oversight to Karlsberger’s design team for the design, planning and management of complex, award-winning projects. He is a collaborative, well-rounded design leader with a strong track record in sustainability and evidence-based design. Jonathan received his Master of Architecture from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, and his Bachelor of Arts in English from Brown University where he graduated magna cum laude.

Susan E. Long, IFMA

Vice President | Director of Interior Design

Susan Long« Contact | Susan has worked at Karlsberger for 13 years collaborating with the architectural design group to bring design concepts inside and create a palette that is pleasing to all ages – the patients, their families, and the staff working there daily. She’s led the interior design team for All Children’s Hospital, Dayton Children’s Medical Center, Dublin Methodist Hospital and has worked on numerous interior design solutions for the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Susan works with clients to explore new, sustainable materials and products while designing interior environments that are healthy, sophisticated, and appropriate. She received her Master’s in Interior Design from The Ohio State University and her Bachelor’s of Science in Interior Design from Ohio University.

Thomas J. Reis

Vice President | Director of Marketing and Business Development

Thomas Reis« Contact | Tom has dedicated more than 40 years of his professional career to working primarily in the healthcare market serving in many capacities ranging from planner, designer, project manager, project executive to office manager. Now in his “second term”, with a combined 16 years with Karlsberger, Tom serves as Director of Marketing and Business Development. Focused on ensuring Karlsberger remains on the cutting edge of the healthcare market, Tom engages with all senior management in developing new client strategies and the importance of maintaining strong client relationships. He received his Bachelors of Science in Architecture from The Ohio State University.

Dave Froehlich, MCP

Vice President | Director of Technology

Dave Froehlich« Contact | Dave joined Karlsberger in 2001 and has worked to integrate emerging technologies that promote team growth and collaboration. He has a unique and artistic approach to IT integration, providing solutions that promote the firm’s growth as a leader in healthcare architecture. After earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Architecture from The Ohio State University, Dave has worked as an architect and gravitated toward enabling himself and his peers through technology.

Dr. Sandra J. Dickinson, Esq.

In-House Counsel | Corporate Secretary

Sandra Dickinson« Contact | Sandra is responsible for the oversight of all legal aspects of Karlsberger’s business, ranging from project contract review to advising the board of directors on corporate governance matters. With experience working with a variety of organizations, from small businesses to large nonprofits, she brings a wealth of expertise to Karlsberger. Sandra received her law degree and Ph.D. in Education Administration from The Ohio State University.
